The Dome of the Rock is a mosque and dome located within the Old City of Jerusalem. Commissioned by Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan in 691, the structure is a World Heritage Site and one of the most looked-up sights in Palestine. It stands as part of Masjid Al-Aqsa and showcases Umayyad art, incorporating materials such as marble, wood, aluminium, and copper.

Planning a visit

The weather in Jerusalem is most favorable for visitors from May through October, when conditions are warmer and drier. Summer temperatures in July and August reach highs of 32 °C with virtually no rain. Those visiting in the winter months, such as January, should expect cooler temperatures ranging from 4 °C to 12 °C and roughly 12 days of rain, which is the wettest time of the year. Ben Gurion International Airport (TLV) in Tel Aviv is the nearest airport, located 42 km from the site. The dome is situated 1 km from East Jerusalem. Because of its location in the Old City, travelers can easily combine a visit with nearby points of interest. The Western Wall, the Golden Gate, and the Old City of Jerusalem itself are all within 0.2 km, while the Temple Institute and the Tomb of Absalom are 0.4 km away.
